For centuries Phaistos hided the most famous exhibit of Heraklion Archaeological Museum – Phaistos disk, which known by its not decrypted inscriptions and is one of the biggest mysteries of humanity so far.

Phaistos is facing to the Psiloritis Mountain – the highest point of Crete Island, place of sacral ancient sanctuary – Kamares cave. That’s the most important sacred place for Minoan and Postminoan Crete.

You can watch over there huge ancient potteries made by Minoan craftsmen, numerous mysterious inscription on the stones, the remains of an ancient sewerage system and plumbing, marble and stone ancient stairs and, of course, a central courtyard, where ceremonial games with the bulls regularly happened. Everything there shows former greatness of the palace, so you will realize what was this mysteriously disappeared first European civilization and will feel the beauty and significance of the place.

Gortyna

Gortyna (gr. Γόρτυνα) is a combination of mythos and the reality, of paganism and Christianity, the creation of nature and man.

This is the place where god Zeus and Phoenician princess Europe were making love under the old plane tree and because of that became sacred to Antique Greeks. They built here 100 city-states of Crete and Gortyna, blessing the pagan gods, became the biggest and most powerful city on the island.

Later in I century BC Gortyna citizens opened their gates to Roman legions and Romans made the city the capital of the island. They were built over there theaters, stadium, racecourse and temples for the pagan and Egyptian gods.

In the Roman period of history the city was the largest, according to various researchers 200.000 people lived there. In 824 AD the Saracens captured Crete and totally destroyed the city. For many centuries Gortyna been forgotten.

The excavation here began at the end of XIX century. One of the first and most famous discoveries of archaeologists was Gortyn Code laws – with embossed lettering inscriptions in Dorian dialect in boustrophedon style – the oldest written law (V century BC). Later there were found well-preserved remains of a small theater, the Temple of Apollo, and a huge amount of statues.

Gortyna was one of the first place where Christianity was adopted and the first city on the Island where Christian church was built. The church was dedicated to St. Titus, a friend and disciple of the Apostle Paul who brought Christianity to these lands. Church of St. Titus partly restored and twice a year orthodox priest conducted the service there.

You can see the sights not only on official archaeological area, but also in ancient olive groves around.

Kommos

Kommos (gr. Κομμός) is a wide and long sandy beach in16 km from our villa. This is the southernmost and most isolated part of a huge continuous beach of the Messara Gulf.

Kommos was an important Minoan settlement and the port of an ancient Minoan Phaistos town on 1800 – 1200 BC, so there are also archaeological site close to the beach, where archaeologists have discovered the remains of an ancient Minoan harbor, shipyards, several monumental palace buildings, storerooms, and the base of Postminoan Greek sanctuary.

Right in front of the archaeological site in 300 meters in the sea there is a beautiful stone, which local people called Volakas. The Greeks believe that Volakas is the top of the mountain, which the blinded Cyclop Polyphemus threw to the ship of Odysseus, who fled with his team from Polyphemus’s cave.

Beach Kommos is widely known also as the best naturist beach on Crete Island. This fame it has from 1960s since hippies settled there.

The length of the naturist part takes about 500 m and located north, a small amount of tamarisks provide pleasant shade here. The southern part of beach equipped with umbrellas, sun beds, toilet, shower, tavern, has lifeguards. There are also sand dunes, where large sea turtles Caretta Caretta like to lay their eggs by the hot summer sun.

(gr. Μάταλα)

In 15 km away from our villa there is a famous Matala Beach – the place of ancient and modern mythmaking.

Ancient Greek myths tell that it’s exactly that bay, where Zeus in a bull form sailed with the beautiful Europe at his back.

Less ancient myths say that in the Matala Bay once was docked the ship with the Spartan governor Menelaus and his wife Elena on board, reclaimed from the Trojans.

In the XX century this area had attracted the hippies from all over the world. So it built modern myths, led to annual festival of hippies and common delusion about Matala as for flower children place only.

Here in Matala you can visit the artificial caves, to take sunbathe, to enjoy the refreshing clear waters and to try Cretan cuisine and seafood offered by numerous costal taverns. Don’t forget to admire the sunset the evening.

Agiofarango and Kali Limenes

If you are interested to do hiking we highly recommend you to visit famous Agiofarango gorge, which located on the south-west part of Messara Plain. The walk on gorge trails takes about 30 – 40 minutes and its fine with children as well.

This gorge was made by two rivers, which went to the Libyan sea and its opens to a nice small pebbles beach.

The name Agiofarango (Saint Gorge) came from the history: since the beginning of Christianity Christian hermits where hided here and lived in asceticism. It’s made Agiofarango famous as first ascetic center in Messara Plain and for all Crete Island.

During your walk in the gorge you will be impressed by cliffs, caves, flora varieties and also small St. Anthony church with last reconstruction on XIV – XV century.

In a few minutes to the east there is one more famous beach of Crete Island – Kali Limenes.

In Greek it means good (quiet) port. The name was giving after one ship came into the bay during a storm and found shelter there. Apostle Paul was on the board and brought the Christianity to Cretans.

The beach Kali Limenes has 3 parts: gray sand with camping aria, light sand with plates at the entrance to the sea and the black and white pebbles part, which hides behind a small peninsula with a small church of St. Paul on top. This third part of the beach is little-known and if you are interested in a secluded seldom-visited beach in 10 minutes walk for the peninsula you will find what you need.
